Review: A Hard Call

A Hard Call A Hard Call by Max Walker
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This book had the feel of a Sam Spade novel, a little gritty, a little hard boiled. And maybe a little tongue in cheek, since a gent instead of a dame walks into to the private investigator’s office. It has mystery, it has suspense, there’s some snarky dialog and banter. Then there’s the emotional connection between the main characters, neither of which is sure they want one. It’s interesting dynamic between Zane Holden, owner of Stonewall Investigations and a high-priced defense attorney, Lorenzo ‘Enzo’ De Luca. Both men are strong, powerful men. Both with issues from things in their past, both trying to work through those issues and move on. For Zane, it’s the murder of his husband by a serial killer. A killer long thought dead and buried. With a new murder, is the serial killer back? Trust is the issue for Enzo, how does he trust again.

Well plotted story that does move you along and keeps you turning the pages. Both Zane and Enzo are well written characters. I think this is the start of a great new series.
